What is Drunk Shakespeare?

At every performance of Drunk Shakespeare, five actors within the The Drunk Shakespeare Society put on one of the famous playwright's works; it changes each night. But this isn't like the Shakespeare you'll see at Shakespeare in the Park or at the Globe. Pre-show, one of the actors takes five shots of whiskey (joined for the first one by an audience member, to prove the liquor's real) and must proceed to play their part. It's up to the other four actors to keep the show going while also following whatever unexpected choices the fifth actor drunkenly makes.

Drunk Shakespeare has been in New York since 2014; at first, the Society only put on Macbeth, but more shows have been added to the rotation. The show has changed venues multiple times since its premiere: It was first at a real bar called Quinn's Bar, then at Times Square's Roy Arias Stages, then at 777 Theatres, where it was playing when the pandemic hit. Since its 2021 reopening, the Gallery at Green Fig, a lounge within the Green Fig restaurant in Midtown, has hosted performances of Drunk Shakespeare in New York.

Certain things about the show have remained the same from venue to venue. Each venue is decorated to look like an old library. Improv, contemporary references, and audience interaction all become part of each show, making even Shakespeare's tragedies into comedies. And most importantly of all, the audience is able to purchase cocktails for themselves and join in the liquor-fueled fun.

See it if A theatrical experience that was hilarious and a great time. Talented improvers. Will see again.

Don’t see it if You need more of a traditional show. It's Shakespeare but that's not why you see the show.
